One of the deepest influences on our thinking comes from the humanist tradition associated with the Aegean.

The spirit of the Aegean is not something we regard as finished or fossilized.

It is alive.

Writers and thinkers such as Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı, known as the Fisherman of Halicarnassus, and Azra Erhat — writer, archaeologist, and translator of Homer’s epics into Turkish — helped reveal this region as more than a scenic landscape. Through their work, the Aegean emerged as a living bridge between antiquity and the modern mind — a place where archaeology, mythology, language, history, and daily human experience belong to the same continuity.

Cevat Şakir, in particular, helped shape a way of seeing that later became inseparable from the spirit of the Blue Voyage. What began as a journey along the southwestern coast of Anatolia became, over time, a cultural way of reading the land and the sea together. The Blue Voyage was never only about travel. It was about slowness, attention, memory, and discovery. It invited people to look again — at ruins, coves, myths, stones, winds, islands, and the long continuity between ancient life and the present. In that sense, it offered not escape, but a more conscious way of dwelling in history, nature, and thought. That sensibility matters to us. Not as imitation, but as intellectual inheritance.
